PPP Series

The PPP Series measure real exchange rates (RERs) for targeted economies. All of our PPP Series are available with the RERs compared to the US, and select economies are also available with respect to Germany.

Using online prices, we compute the relative cost of a basket of identical goods in each country versus the US (or Germany) and signal RER deviations from PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) or RER historic averages.

Our RERs use a common basket of ~250 product categories matched across countries including food, electronics and fuel, avoiding biases typically found in single-item calculations or methodologies based on CPIs.

Our series are updated daily and released at the beginning of the following month.

The PPP Series includes: charts on real exchange rates (RER); relative prices (RP); overvaluation under PPP or RER historic averages; and expected nominal exchange rates under PPP or RER historic averages (examples on the right).

In addition, the PriceStats US Dollar PPP Series leverages PriceStats’s existing PPP Series to estimate the effects of US Dollar real exchange rate movements on international trade with the United States.

The Australian PPP Series is shown here through 2014 as an example of what the PriceStats PPP Series look like. PPP Series are available for Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Spain & the United Kingdom, as well as the Eurozone. PPP Series with respect to Germany are available for France, Spain, the UK and Japan.
